'Antara' chief meets Megawati<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Antara news agency chief Mohamad Sobary visited on
\nTuesday President Megawati Soekarnoputri at her official
\nresidence, just days after news agency employees staged a protest
\ndemanding Sobary's resignation.<\/p>\n
The news agency chief said he visited the President to report
\non the planned launch of a book about Megawati, and that it was
\nnot related to last week's demonstration.<\/p>\n
A number of employees of Antara staged a protest last week
\ndemanding that Sobary, who was appointed by former president
\nAbdurrahman Wahid in 2000, resign. The protest resulted in the
\ndismissal of two Antara employees.<\/p>\n
\"Principally, I came here not because of the protest, but to
\nreport about a book on Megawati, which is almost finished,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The book, titled Tidak Ada Jalan Pintas: Perjalanan Seorang
\nPerempuan (No Shortcut: The Journey of a Woman), will be about
\nMegawati's thoughts and her career.<\/p>\n
The book will be launched in September by Antara, Sobary said.

Nuclear power not a threat<\/p>\n
SURABAYA, East Java: The Nuclear Power Supervisory Agency
\n(Bapeten) said on Tuesday people should not be worried about
\nthe utilization of nuclear power, which the agency said was safe.<\/p>\n
Bapeten head M. Ridwan said that over the last 56 years, there
\nhad only been some 25 industrial and medical nuclear power
\naccidents, and eight nuclear reactor accidents.<\/p>\n
In the industrial and medical accidents, 280 people were
\ninjured and 101 people died, while in the nuclear reactor
\nincidents, 186 were injured and 148 died.<\/p>\n
\"The number of deaths from nuclear reactor accidents comes to
\nonly 2.6 people per year. That is less than chemical pollution
\ncasualties, which reach 200 people per year, or traffic
\naccidents, which take the lives of 11,000 people annually,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Ridwan said nuclear power was widely utilized in various
\nindustries, including mining and energy, and brought many more

Thai fishermen deported<\/p>\n
PALEMBANG, South Sumatra: The South Sumatra Police deported on
\nTuesday 36 fishermen from Thailand who were detained last year
\nfor illegally fishing in Indonesia's territorial waters.<\/p>\n
The chief of the South Sumatra Police's Water and Air Unit,
\nSupt. Dwi Marsanto, said the deportations were paid for by local
\nresidents and businesspeople.<\/p>\n
\"We deported them because the Thai Embassy did not pay
\nattention to their plight. We released them on humanitarian
\ngrounds,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He added that the Thai fishermen were caught on Aug. 23, 2001,
\non Leman island, near Belitung island and Kalimantan.<\/p>\n
In addition, some 17 Vietnamese fishermen will soon be sent

Navy detains foreign dredger<\/p>\n
BATAM, Riau: The Indonesian Navy has seized another foreign
\nvessel allegedly illegally transporting sea sand from Bintan
\nisland in Riau province.<\/p>\n
Antara quoted a source in Singapore as saying the vessel was
\ndetained on Monday after its crew failed show legal documents to
\ntransport the sand. The vessel was reportedly authorized only to
\ncarry out a survey.<\/p>\n
The vessel is owned by a businessman from Singapore, with
\nbacking by high-ranking officials in Riau, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
The news agency said the seizure was another success for the
\nNavy, after earlier confiscating seven foreign-registered vessels
\nallegedly transporting sand illegally.<\/p>\n
Naval officers confirmed the seizure but refused to provide
\nfurther comment.<\/p>\n
Riau is known for its high-quality sea sand, which is mainly
\nexported to Singapore, which uses the sand for land reclamation
