'Antara' Bali has new chief<\/p>\n
DENPASAR, Bali: Antara chief editor Mohamad Sobary installed
\non Friday Chandra Hamdani Noor as the head of the news agency's
\nbureau in Bali, replacing IGB Alit Wiratmaja.<\/p>\n
In his remarks, Sobary criticized the national press for
\nabusing its freedom by allowing "a spill-over of anger and
\nrevenge". The phenomenon, he said, has spread fear, anxiety and
\nthreat.<\/p>\n
He said the news agency, despite its link to the government,
\nwould maintain its independence without having to disregard
\nsocial norms and press ethics.<\/p>\n
"Professional journalism is reflected not only from the
\ncourage and freedom it exercises in expressing its criticism, but
\nthrough the process of criticizing," Sobary said.<\/p>\n
Antara was widely criticized in the past because of its lack
\nof independence from government control.<\/p>\n
The news agency employs no less than 300 journalists across
\nthe country, serving 70 dailies, television and radio stations.<\/p>\n
Wiratmaja will be promoted as deputy managing editor of Antara
\nhead office in Jakarta. (zen)<\/p>",
