Antam unit to mine diamond<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): PT Galuh Cempaka, a firm partly owned by the
\npublicly-listed state general mining company PT Aneka Tambang
\n(Antam), has said it will start mining diamond deposits off the
\ncoast of South Kalimantan in the near future.<\/p>\n
Company president Chong Lee Cheng was quoted by Antara as
\nsaying in Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan, that the company had
\nundertaken preparatory work and would shortly begin dredging the
\nsite, which lies offshore from the village of Palam in Cempaka
\nMartapura district.<\/p>\n
Chong said the company had found diamond deposits of 35,000
\ncarats in its contract area.<\/p>\n
The company will export the diamonds to the United States.<\/p>\n
Galuh Cempaka is 80 percent owned by Ashton Malaysian Mining
\nCompany (AMMC) -- a joint venture between a Malaysian company and
\nAshton Mining of Australia -- while the remaining 20 percent is
\nheld by Antam.<\/p>\n
Martapura is well known for its diamonds, which the locals
\nhave been extracting using traditional equipment for decades.
