Ansett grounds Boeing 767s<\/p>\n
SYDNEY (AP): Ansett Airlines has grounded almost half of its
\nfleet of Boeing 767 aircraft after cracks were found in the
\nengine mountings, aviation authorities said Monday.<\/p>\n
Ansett, the country's second largest airline, has suffered a
\nseries of problems in recent months and has been forced to ground
\nplanes for safety reasons, including failure to perform regular
\nchecks.<\/p>\n
Ansett operates long-haul international flights to Hong Kong,
\nJapan, Indonesia, New Zealand and Fiji in addition to its
\ndomestic services.<\/p>\n
In the latest incident, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority
\n(CASA) said Ansett engineers discovered cracks in the engine
\npylons, which join engines to wings, of three of its fleet of
\nseven Boeing 767-200 planes.<\/p>\n
Ansett voluntarily grounded the three planes after weekend
\nsafety checks, CASA spokesman Peter Gibson said.<\/p>\n
Gibson said CASA would ground the remaining four 767 planes
\nuntil they are inspected.<\/p>\n
\"We take this whole thing very seriously, (the engine pylon)
\nis a vital component,\" Gibson said.<\/p>",
