        "content": "<p>Another 'Westerling'<\/p>\n<p>One day the Dutch ordered all male inhabitants of Payakumbuh<br>\nin West Sumatra, to sit close to the bridge on the broad terraces<br>\nleading down to the river Batang Agam. An important announcement<br>\nwas going to be made.<\/p>\n<p>After everybody was seated, eagerly awaiting the news, the<br>\nDutch soldiers suddenly machine gunned them from the bridge. The<br>\nmen tumbled over each other into the river. One of them survived<br>\nthe massacre because he was sitting on the lowest step and was<br>\ncovered by the dead bodies.<\/p>\n<p>A monument was erected close to the bridge depicting a group<br>\nof grieving mothers, pointing to the river, where their beloved<br>\nsons had died. The bridge is called Ratapan Ibu -- \"Lamenting<br>\nMothers.\"<\/p>\n<p>Two of my cousins, Buyung Gadang and Damanhuri, had to sit on<br>\nthe rail of that same bridge, and were shot. Their teenaged<br>\nbodies fell into the river. Their sister is still alive and lives<br>\nin Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Another cousin Mukni was taken by the Dutch and never came<br>\nback. A friend still has scars on his wrists from being<br>\nelectrocuted by the Dutch.<\/p>\n<p>There are many cases like this, almost every family had<br>\nmembers murdered by the Dutch.
