Another taxi thief beaten to death by mob<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Angry Kembangan residents in West Jakarta
\nsavagely attacked two youths caught red-handed attempting to
\nsteal a taxi late Monday.<\/p>\n
One of them, identified as Nanang Amanda, 20, died on the way
\nto the hospital with severe head wounds inflicted by sharp
\nweapons. His accomplice, Wawan Mulyono, 19, was arrested by local
\npolice.<\/p>\n
\"Both were attempting to steal a Dian taxi from its driver,
\nZamroni,\" city police spokesman Lt. Col. Zainuri Lubis alleged on
\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
According to preliminary police investigation, the suspects,
\nboth of nearby Rawa Buaya village, first pretended to be
\npassengers and asked Zamroni to take them to Jl. Raya Kembangan.<\/p>\n
\"It was 11:10 p.m.,\" officer Lubis said.<\/p>\n
Once they reached the destination, one of the men threatened
\nZamroni with a machete.<\/p>\n
\"One of them then tried to take over the steering wheel but
\nZamroni was brave enough to shout for help, while the other
\nsuspect, who wielded the sharp weapon, was busy taking Zamroni's
\nwristwatch off him,\" Lubis said.<\/p>\n
The driver's scream alerted local residents, who swarmed to
\nthe scene to help him.<\/p>\n
\"They not only helped the victim, but also played judge of the
\nsuspects. They only stop beating the suspects after police
\narrived to disperse them,\" the officer said.<\/p>\n
Lubis said the police highly appreciated the public's
\nawareness of the need to curb the capital's escalating crime
\nrate, but he warned Jakartans not to take the law into their own
\nhands.<\/p>\n
\"So we appeal to the public to just apprehend the suspects and
\nlet the police handle them through legal procedures.<\/p>\n
\"Criminals will never learn the error of their ways unless
\nthey're brought to court and sentenced for their wrongdoings,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
In the early hours of the same day, dozens of people burned
\nalive an alleged taxi thief in front of the Cikokol market in
\nTangerang on the outskirts of Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The dead suspect was identified as 35-year-old Badrawi who,
\nwith his accomplice who is still at large, attempted to steal a
\nPrestasi taxi from driver Suhari.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, five men impersonating police officers cheated a
\nmotorist and made off with his Kijang van early on Monday on Jl.
\nTubagus Angke, also in West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The van's owner, Daheri, 33, of the Krendeng Tengah area in
\nWest Java told the local police that the five, who were not
\nwearing police uniforms and did not produce ID cards, stopped him
\nnear a gas station at an intersection at about 5:30 a.m.<\/p>\n
\"After pulling over his gray Kijang van, Daheri heard one of
\nthe men shout 'Stop, we're police officers!',\" Lubis quoted the
\nvictim as saying.<\/p>\n
One of the robbers then approached Daheri, who was alone, and
\nthreatened him with a machete.<\/p>\n
Scared, Daheri opened his door and got out of the van, which
\nthe culprits quickly got into and took over the steering wheel.<\/p>\n
They made Daheri get back into the vehicle and they drove in
\nthe direction of Cengkareng, the officer said.<\/p>\n
The robbers later dumped the vehicle's owner on the street.
