PHILIPPINES: Another Cabinet minister has quit Philippine
\nPresident Gloria Arroyo's government, officials said on Sunday,
\nbut denied it was linked to allegations of vote fraud against the
\nembattled leader.<\/p>\n
Silvestre Afable resigned from his post as chief of the
\npresidential palace's communications department, but will stay on
\nas Manila's chief peace negotiator with the Muslim separatist
\nMoro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), said Arroyo's spokesman
\nIgnacio Bunye.<\/p>\n
"I know that he has expressed a desire on the peace process.
\nHe will continue with the OCD (Office of the Communications
\nDirector) until a replacement is made," Bunye said.<\/p>\n
He did not say what prompted Afable to quit, but denied press
\nspeculation that the minister's resignation was linked to an
\nongoing political crisis engulfing Arroyo's presidency.<\/p>\n
Afable could not be immediately reached for comment.<\/p>\n
Arroyo's political adviser Gabriel Claudio also confirmed
\nAfable's resignation, but stressed he remains a part of Arroyo's
\ngovernment as a chief negotiator.<\/p>\n
"He wants to focus on it," Claudio said, referring to Afable's
\nnegotiations with MILF. -- AFP<\/p>",
