Another protected building destroyed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The number of destroyed or damaged historical
\nbuildings in the capital is increasing.<\/p>\n
Another protected building, located on Jl. Teuku Cik Ditiro,
\nCentral Jakarta, which once won a city administration award for
\nits well-preserved architecture, was demolished over the course
\nof last week.<\/p>\n
All that is left of the area, which used to be a residential
\none, are debris and bricks. The site has been encircled by a high
\nwhite fence.<\/p>\n
An expert on the city's historical buildings, Arya Abieta,
\nsaid on Saturday this was another example of the city
\nadministration's failure to preserve old and protected buildings.<\/p>\n
\"People have seen yet again the city administration's
\nseriousness in protecting old and protected buildings.<\/p>\n
\"Such an occurrence should not happen if the city
\nadministration was performing its monitoring and controlling role
\nseriously,\" Arya told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
\"It is made more saddening because the building on Jl. Teuku
\nCik Ditiro won a city administration award for its well-preserved
\narchitecture in 1995,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Arya, who is also head of the Architectural Research and
\nPreservation department of the Association of Indonesian
\nArchitects (IAI), said he had observed the demolition of the
\nbuilding -- estimated to have been built in the 1920s -- last
\nweek. \"But I could not do anything because there was no
\ninformation on the building's owners.\"<\/p>\n
When the building won the award it was owned by business
\ntycoon Mohammad (Bob) Hasan, he said. There is no information on
\nthe current owner of the protected building.<\/p>\n
Arya said the building was valuable because it followed the
\nmodel of Indische Huis, an architectural trend of the early
\ntwentieth century, characterized by large verandas and
\nsymmetrical composition in room division. Houses of this type are
\nmostly found in the elite Menteng area of Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The house was included in the Menteng preservation area
\ndeclared under a Gubernatorial Decree in 1975. Arya predicted
\nthat there were some 100 old buildings in Menteng alone.<\/p>\n
The number of old and protected buildings in the city
\ncontinues to decrease, either because they are demolished or
\nrebuilt in different styles.<\/p>\n
There is no exact data on missing or destroyed buildings, but
\npeople can clearly seem them in many places in the city.<\/p>\n
Contacted separately on Saturday, head of the City Museum and
\nRestoration Agency Robert Silalahi, said he had yet to receive
\ninformation on the flattened building.<\/p>\n
\"We are, of course, upset by the event but we can do nothing,
\nas the supervisory role is managed by the city's Development
\nControl Agency.<\/p>\n
\"The control agency should not have issued a permit allowing
\nthe building to be flattened if it is categorized as an
\nhistorical one,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The Museum and Restoration Agency is only responsible for
\nmaking recommendations to the Development Control Agency, while
\nthe latter issue licenses to reconstruct or destroy historical
\nbuildings, Robert said. (ind)<\/p>",
