Another explosion in Jakarta<\/p>\n
Since the Bali bombings, two "small" bombs have exploded in
\nthe country; one at a building belonging to the National Police
\nHeadquarters in February, the other one at the Medan's mayor
\noffice in March.<\/p>\n
The two bombs did not claim any lives, but they reminded us of
\nthe need to be vigilant against the possibility of bomb blasts
\nafter the Bali tragedy, because further deadly blasts could
\nhappen anywhere, anytime.<\/p>\n
Frustration over events within one's environment could lead to
\na bombing, or political or economic motives could lead to an
\nexplosion.<\/p>\n
The Bali bombings, however, told us that frustration should
\nnot originate from domestic problems. Anger against Americans was
\nreportedly the main motive for the Bali bombings. The Bali
\nbombings have destroyed local tourism, on which many people
\ndepended for their livelihoods.<\/p>\n
An investigation into the latest bombing, which occurred
\nbehind the United Nation's office in Jakarta, should be conducted
\ncarefully.<\/p>\n
Analysis could vary on the motive for the blast. It may have
\nbeen an expression of dissatisfaction at the UN's failure to
\nproperly deal with the Iraq war. Or it may have occurred due to a
\nnumber of reasons.<\/p>\n
The police must reveal what was really behind the bombing so
\nas to curb excessive speculation.<\/p>\n

Burglary rampant<\/p>\n
At least 21 burglaries have taken place in Greater Jakarta
\nwithin the last two months. The latest two robberies occurred on
\nJl. Cendrawasih, West Jakarta, and on Jl. Cempaka Putih, Central
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
The keys to preventing house robbery are the house owners and
\nthe neighborhood where a house is located. The police cannot
\npossibly protect a neighborhood 100 percent, while reporting a
\ncrime -- which can take place in the space of a few moments --
\ntakes time.<\/p>\n
In a neighborhood where residents know each other well, a
\nfamily could ask a neighbor to watch their house for them
\nwhenever they go out of town, for example.<\/p>\n
Local residents could become the best guards in a neighborhood
\nif the situation is conducive.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, the level of solidarity among families differs
\nin every neighborhood.<\/p>\n

You don't have to be a citizen to be a patriot. Joseph Menusa,
\nFrancisco Martinez, Jose Gutierrez, Jesus Suarez del Solar and
\nJose Garibay died showing that.<\/p>\n
The five Californians, all immigrants, were among the first
\nU.S. casualties in Iraq. Congress has decreed that they and other
\nnon-citizens pose too much of a security risk to inspect bags at
\nairports. Yet they willingly sacrificed their lives for their new
\ncountry. Immigrants have done this in every war since the
\nRevolution.<\/p>\n
Eliminating delays to citizenship is the least the government
\ncan do for those in uniform.<\/p>\n
Immigrants sign up for the same reasons as other Americans:
\nCareer opportunities, educational benefits, adventure, devotion
\nto country.<\/p>\n
Last July, President Bush cited the war on terror when he
\nadded a big inducement to enlistment. He ordered that citizenship
\napplications of those on active duty be pushed to the top of the
\npile.<\/p>\n
It shouldn't take death, though, to get the government's
\nattention. Citizenship should be enjoyed by the living.<\/p>\n
