Anniversary of scout movement<\/p>\n
PURWOREJO, C. Java (JP): Vice President Try Sutrisno said
\nyesterday Indonesians should place the interests of the nation
\nabove personal or group interests.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a ceremony to commemorate the 36th anniversary of
\nScouts Day, Try said Indonesian scouts, and youths in general,
\nshould choose activities which prepare them for the future.<\/p>\n
Scouts are pioneers who stand at the front line with self-
\nreliance and confidence, he said, adding that members of the
\nscout movement should also help the community achieve progress
\nand prosperity.<\/p>\n
Self-reliance alone, however, is not enough to play a great
\nrole in the global arena, he said. Toward this end, the
\nIndonesian people should place themselves in an interdependent
\nposition, he said.<\/p>\n
\"By doing so, we can establish harmonious and mutually
\nbeneficial relations rather than exploit other parties,\" he said.<\/p>\n
In addition, he said, people should always make an effort to
\nlearn how to communicate and negotiate with other nations.<\/p>\n
The vice president underscored the need for scouts not only to
\ngain expertise but also to dedicate themselves to the community
\nas well as to development.<\/p>\n
It is imperative for the Indonesian people to prepare the
\nscouts and youths to address future challenges, he said.<\/p>\n
In the next century, scouts and youths will play a decisive
\nrole in ensuring the survival of the nation, he said.<\/p>\n
\"Thus, the Indonesian people should ... forge cooperation on
\nthe basis of similarity and mutual respect,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"This can only be achieved if the Indonesian people have self-
\nreliance,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Also present at the ceremony were Mrs. Try Sutrisno,
\nCoordinating Minister for People's Welfare Azwar Anas, Minister
\nof Agriculture Sjarifudin Baharsjah and Minister of Education and
