Annan, Mega to discuss global issues<\/p>\n

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan will meet
\nPresident Megawati Soekarnoputri on Friday to discuss global
\nissues before heading to East Timor for the independence
\ncelebration in the capital of Dili, said Minister of Foreign
\nAffairs Hassan Wirayuda on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian government hailed Annan's visit, but Hassan
\nstopped short of saying that President Megawati and the UN
\nsecretary-general would specifically discuss the East Timor
\nissue.<\/p>\n
\"The meeting will be an exchange of views on the development
\nof global issues. We appreciate his stopover in Jakarta before
\ndeparting to Dili,\" Hassan told reporters before attending the
\nCabinet meeting chaired by President Megawati Soekarnoputri.<\/p>\n
Indonesia, however, would ask for an explanation from Annan
\nregarding the UN secretary general's decision to abort sending a
\nfact-finding team to probe human rights abuses committed by
\nIsrael in Palestine.<\/p>\n
\"Kofi Annan canceled the fact-finding team. We will bring up
\nthis matter as we (Indonesia) are in agreement with the UN
\nSecurity Council's resolution to send a fact-finding team,\"
\nHassan told reporters.<\/p>\n
In the meeting with the UN secretary-general, Indonesia will
\nreiterate its stance on the Middle East conflict of assisting
\nPalestine politically and economically, he said.<\/p>\n
He added that Indonesia would also discuss ways of assisting
\nPalestine economically as discussed earlier with other countries
\nduring his recent trip to the Middle East, to help ease poverty
\nin the area.<\/p>\n
The fact-finding team, which was named by Annan to probe human
\nrights abuses at the Jenin camp in Palestine, was canceled after
\nIsrael objected to its composition and refused to allow the team
\nto enter the camp grounds if their concerns were not addressed.<\/p>\n
Annan will arrive in Jakarta on Friday and is scheduled to
\nhave lunch with President Megawati Soekarnoputri at the State
\nPalace after which he will hold talks with Megawati and several
\nCabinet ministers to be followed by the issuing of a joint
\nstatement.<\/p>\n
On Saturday, he will meet Hassan before departing to Dili.<\/p>\n
Hassan also denied speculation on Thursday that Annan would
\nask about Indonesia's efforts in unearthing cases of human rights
\nabuses.<\/p>",
