        "content": "<p>Annan blasts some EU countries<\/p>\n<p>STOCKHOLM (AFP): United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan<br>\non Tuesday accused some European Union countries of violating the<br>\nUN convention on refugees, saying they were unjustifiably<br>\ntightening immigration policies instead of granting asylum.<\/p>\n<p>\"Because of the popular resentment towards immigrants, some<br>\ngovernments are taking approaches which are not in strict<br>\naccordance with the 1951 Geneva Convention\" on refugees, he told<br>\nreporters here after a meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Goeran<br>\nPersson and Foreign Minister Anna Lindh.<\/p>\n<p>Annan did not specify any countries by name.<\/p>\n<p>The UN chief expanded on comments made Monday at a two-day<br>\nInternational Forum on Combating Intolerance here, when he<br>\ncompared the EU's system unfavorably with North America's<br>\napproach. \"I encouraged the EU to adopt the right approach to<br>\nrefugee policy,\" he said.<\/p>",
