Animals rescued from private home<\/p>\n

The orangutan gripped the bars of its cage on the back of a
\ntruck, having just been rescued from four years inside a cage at
\na house in Jatipadang, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Some time last year, a neighbor said, the orangutan, estimated
\nto be five years old, enjoyed a brief taste of freedom when it
\nmanaged to escape its cage.<\/p>\n
\"The orangutan squatted on my roof for a while. But then its
\ncaretakers caught it and took it back to its cage,\" said Dian,
\nthe neighbor.<\/p>\n
When officers from the Jakarta Police and the Ministry of
\nForestry, as well as environment activists from ProFauna, raided
\nthe house on Thursday at about 10 p.m., the orangutan was found
\nchained to its cage by its neck.<\/p>\n
\"The chain was wound around its neck,\" said Hardi Baktiantoro,
\nProFauna coordinator. \"The orangutan showed signs of stress,
\nacting exactly like a distressed human being.\"<\/p>\n
The orangutan, whose gender was not given, was owned by a Navy
\nofficer, who is also a dentist. Neighbors identified the owner as
\nCapt. Andi Sisyanto, who has a dental clinic in Pasar Minggu,
\nSouth Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Besides the orangutan, Andi also allegedly kept several other
\nprotected animals: two Papuan birds-of-paradise, three deer, one
\npalm cockatoo, three Tanimbar corellas, three Salmon-crested
\ncockatoos, five purple-crowned lorikeets and one sulphur-crested
\ncockatoo.<\/p>\n
Under Law No. 5\/1990, trapping, keeping or trading protected
\nanimals carries a maximum penalty of six years in prison or a Rp
\n100 million (US$11,764) fine.<\/p>\n
\"Since he (Capt. Andi) is an active military officer, we will
\nturn over his case to the Military Police,\" the city police's
\nresource and environmental division chief, Adj. Sr. Comr. Ahmad
\nHaydar, said on Friday.<\/p>\n
\"Andi also has seven peacocks. But he argued that the peacocks
\nwere imported from India, so were not protected by Law. No.
\n5\/1990 on the conservation of natural resources and the
\necosystem.<\/p>\n
\"Therefore, the police and forestry officials did not seize
\n(the peacocks),\" Hardi said, adding that the police would check
\nwhether the birds were imported legally or illegally.<\/p>\n
Many affluent city residents keep wild animals in their homes,
\na practice that has not stopped despite increased raids by the
\npolice.<\/p>\n
All of the protected animals seized from Andi's house were
\nbrought to the Ministry of Forestry's Animal Transit Center in
\nTegal Alur, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"They will spend between two and four weeks at the center
\nbefore they are sent to animal rehabilitation centers,\" Hardi
\nsaid. \"The orangutan will go to a center in Kalimantan while the
\nother animals will probably be sent to a center in Malang, East
\nJava.\"<\/p>\n
At the rehabilitation centers, the animals will be taught how
\nto survive in the wild.<\/p>\n
Within a month, the orangutan is expected to be back in the
\nforest, without a chain around its neck.<\/p>",
