'Angkot' van drivers on strike<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): Hundreds of Angkot public minivan drivers went on
\nstrike Tuesday, demanding that the government set new fares for
\nthem following the increase in fuel prices.<\/p>\n
The drivers of minivans plying the Bogor-Citeureup route
\ncomplained they often had to argue with passengers about the fare
\nbecause of the absence of standardized fares.<\/p>\n
The strike started at 6 a.m. and lasted until 12 a.m,
\nstranding hundreds of passengers, mostly students.<\/p>\n
Several police officers stopped passing trucks and asked their
\ndrivers to carry passengers.<\/p>\n
Andi, one of the drivers, said the drivers expected the fare
\nto be increased from Rp 800 to Rp 1,500.<\/p>\n
He said the drivers had already increased the fare but many
\npassengers refused to comply and would only pay between Rp 900
\nand Rp 1,000.<\/p>\n
Some of drivers joined the strike because they were afraid of
\nreprisals by their striking colleagues.<\/p>\n
\"I'm afraid that they would attack my van if I did not join
\nthem,\" Sudomo said.<\/p>\n
The drivers also stopped other minivans and buses which passed
\ntheir route, including buses plying Bogor-Depok, Bogor-Kampung
\nRambutan and Bogor-Pasar Minggu.<\/p>\n
Officials of the local office of the Land Transportation
\nOwners Organization (Organda) told the striking drivers the
\nmayoralty's decision on the fare increase had been made on Friday
\nbut it had yet to be announced because of technical reasons.<\/p>\n
Surachman said the fare would be increased to Rp 950 from the
\ncurrent Rp 650. (24\/jun)<\/p>",
