Ancol bridge 'not obstructing river's flow'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Vice Governor TB. M. Rais yesterday refuted
\nMinister of Public Works Radinal Moochtar's claims that the
\nconstruction of a bridge, in front of Ancol Dreamland's entrance
\nin North Jakarta, obstructed the Ancol river's flow.<\/p>\n
Rais, who deals with economic and development affairs, said
\nthe bridge's foundations did not obstruct the river's flow
\nbecause the canal functioned more as a water catchment area.<\/p>\n
\"The canal has been turned into a reservoir which will retain
\nwater from the Pademangan areas,\" he said.<\/p>\n
While touring the city to check flood control systems last
\nThursday, Radinal discovered the bridge's foundations occupied
\nthree-quarters of the river's width<\/p>\n
He said the bridge hampered the government's efforts to curb
\nannual flooding during the wet season by blocking the river's
\nflow.<\/p>\n
The bridge is being built for the coming New Year's Eve
\nactivities in Ancol Dreamland as the old one is on the brink of
\ncollapse, said Prawoto, the city's assistant secretary for
\neconomic and development affairs.<\/p>\n
The old bridge will be demolished next year.<\/p>\n
During last Thursday's inspection Radinal criticized
\nDreamland's management for dumping waste into the Ancol river
\nsaying the waste would reduce the river's capacity and make the
\nflood gates ineffective.<\/p>\n
Rais said the Ciputra Group, which manages the recreation
\ncenter, used to dump its waste into the river but said the city
\nhad ordered Dreamland's management to build a sewage system so
\nthe waste could go straight into the sea.<\/p>\n
\"The implementation of the order has just been carried out
