A number of<br>\nimportant events this year -- especially the general elections --<br>\nwill shape the future of the nation. Of no less importance is the<br>\nfact that global developments in our shrinking world create the<br>\npossibility of our country being affected by situations in our<br>\nneighboring ASEAN countries or elsewhere. For these reasons the<br>\nPresident's reminder that we face the coming year in a spirit of<br>\nunity is of great importance.<\/p>\n<p>We feel justified in being concerned with the recent spate of<br>\ndisturbances that have brought forth issues and led to incidents<br>\nbased on ethnic, religious or racial differences. To cite the<br>\nwords of Gen. (ret.) Soemitro, these incidents could be<br>\ndetrimental to the future generation of Indonesians. After 50<br>\nyears of independence, we still have not managed to overcome some<br>\nbasic problems.<\/p>\n<p>It is essential that we reflect and take a first step towards<br>\nrealizing a national life that is based on the constitution and<br>\nthe noble principles of our national Pancasila ideology.<\/p>\n<p>-- Kompas, Jakarta<\/p>",
