The red and white flag was
hoisted, the national anthem Indonesia Raya was played, the
athletes, the coaches and the organizers hugged each other. The
scene was familiar to us. However, this time we watched and stood
stock-still in puzzlement. This was one of the rare moments when
Indonesian people were really united without a reference to
"ethnic Chinese" being made.

It was ironic that at a time when looting and discriminatory
acts had just passed, the athletes, mostly ethnic Chinese, had
just struggled for the nation. Is it only at such moments that
the ethnic Chinese are part of the nation?

On the one hand, we have acknowledged Indonesia as our
birthplace, our residence and our home. On the other, the
attitude of the government and other citizens is sometimes more
than apathetic. This makes us think again about whether Indonesia
really is our country too.

The question is: how long will the "exclusive" treatment apply
to ethnic Chinese? (We do not like the term.) It is undeniable
that our neighboring countries have been more successful in the
assimilation of their citizens. If we really are part of the body
of this nation, as averred by Amien Rais, give us the chance to
play an active role in this body. A missing body part or the
amputation of a body part will result in deformity. Is it not so,
Pak Amien?

We only want a country that also wants us. Is it impossible?
We are indeed Chinese-Indonesians. What is wrong with that?

Witnessing the emotional atmosphere of the victory of the
Indonesian Thomas Cup team, we felt the irony of it all.

TEN STUDENTS

of Pro-reform,

Jakarta
",
