An independent police force<\/p>\n
With the dawning of a new era for our police force as an
\ninstitution separate from the Armed Forces, we hope the police
\nwill be able to perform its duties in a more independent and
\nautonomous way. The ultimate purpose (of the split) is, of
\ncourse, to enhance the police's professionalism and to make sure
\nthat public order can be better maintained.<\/p>\n
Henceforth, the police need no longer feel nervous when facing
\nsituations that involve members of the military ... because the
\npolice no longer stands in the military line of command. Remarks
\nthat the police always appears to be hesitant in resolving
\nsituations that involve the military should, therefore, belong to
\nthe past.<\/p>\n
Whichever incident the police has to resolve must be done
\nunder the principle that all people are equal before the law. The
\npolice has the authority and the obligation to investigate all
\ncriminal incidents -- irrespective of whether they involve
\ncivilians or members of the military -- without being hampered by
\nthe military command hierarchy.<\/p>\n
The relevant question now for the police to answer is: Is it
\nready to do its duty without the direct support and backup of the
\nmilitary?<\/p>\n
