An anti-integrationist trap<\/p>\n
The statement by the chairman of the Indonesian Council of
\nUlemas, KH Hasan Basri, that the current case involving (East
\nTimor Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes) Belo does not concern
\nreligion comes as a relief. So does the statement issued by the
\nchairman of the Commission for Interreligious Relations of the
\nBishops Council of Indonesia, Monsignor AB Sinaga, that the case
\nhas nothing to do with the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n
We can understand that the patriotic sentiments of the
\nmajority of Indonesians have been stirred by the interview (with
\nEast Timor Bishop Belo) that was published on October 14 by Der
\nSpiegel magazine. Nevertheless, we believe that restraint should
\nbe exercised by everyone because the correctness of the published
\ninterview is still being studied.<\/p>\n
If it should be proven correct, it would be Belo as an
\nindividual who must bear the responsibilities rather than the
\nchurch to which he belongs. Any reactions against his remarks
\nshould therefore be addressed to Belo as a person and should not
\nbe allowed to spread any further.<\/p>\n
We must all be aware of the fact that anti-integration and
\nanti-Indonesia groups will always try to spread their divisive
\npropaganda for the purpose of inciting unrest in that youngest of
\nIndonesian provinces. Therefore, those who fall into their trap
\nwould unconsciously be marching to the drum of the anti-
\nintegrationists.<\/p>\n
