Amoco to build PTA plant<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): U.S.-based Amoco Corp is investing 1.2
\nbillion ringgit (US$480 million) to build its biggest purified
\nterephthalic acid (PTA) plant to manufacture the raw material for
\npolyester here, a report said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Amoco Chemical (M) Sdn. Bhd., the local wholly-owned unit of
\nAmoco, said the plant would form the petrochemical giant's
\ninternational base for PTA production.<\/p>\n
\"It will also provide us with the platform for further
\nexpansion in terms of plants and product line in the future,\"
\nAmoco Chemical's managing director Woodrow Garmon told the Star
\ndaily.<\/p>\n
The plant, located at Gebeng industrial estate in central
\nPahang state, was already 65-percent completed and was scheduled
\nto begin operations in the middle of next year, Garmon said.<\/p>\n
\"About half of the production will be sold in Malaysia,\" he
\nsaid, with the rest to be exported.<\/p>\n
Amoco Corp has more than $28 billion in worldwide assets with
\nplants in the United States, Belgium, Mexico, Brazil, Spain,
\nTaiwan and South Korea, officials said.<\/p>\n
