Amnesty invited to East Timor<\/p>\n
DILI, East Timor: The Commission for Peace and Justice under
\nthe local diocese has asked members of the National Commission on
\nHuman Rights and Amnesty International to visit the province to
\nobserve human rights conditions.<\/p>\n
In a meeting on Monday night, activists of the Commission for
\nPeace and Justice resolved that the Jakarta and London-based
\nhuman rights watchdog organizations should see what the activists
\nclaim are violations of human rights in East Timor.<\/p>\n
The activists expressed concern over the increase in the
\nnumber of violent incidents in the province which, they said, had
\nlead to human rights abuses during the first month of this year.<\/p>\n
The meeting, led by commission chairman Father Matheus Lopez
\nda Cruz, focused on violence, in particular violence related to
\npolitics, which had taken place in Baucau, Dili, Ermera, Liquisa
\nand Bobonaro.<\/p>\n
Members of the National Commission on Human Rights and Amnesty
\nInternational should see for themselves what is happening in East
