        "content": "<p>Amien admits to quitting over criticism<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Outspoken Moslem scholar Amien Rais admitted<br>\nyesterday that his recent resignation from a leading post in the<br>\ninfluential Association of Indonesian Moslem Intellectuals (ICMI)<br>\nwas partly caused by his critical stance over many government<br>\npolicies.<\/p>\n<p>\"I resigned from ICMI because of the limited time I could give<br>\nit, but I have to be honest that I resigned because of my<br>\ncriticism against (the mining project in) Busang and Freeport<br>\nwhich involves the interests of the nation,\" he was quoted by<br>\nAntara as saying yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>While Amien's statement was in answer to earlier speculation<br>\nthat he was made to resign the post of chairman of the<br>\nassociation's Council of Experts, it did not specify whether he<br>\nwas forced out or whether he went of his own accord.<\/p>\n<p>The chairman of the 28 million-strong Muhammadiyah Moslem<br>\norganization and political science lecturer at Gadjah Mada<br>\nUniversity in Yogyakarta, once called the small profit Indonesia<br>\nreceived from foreign mining operations \"unconstitutional.\"<\/p>\n<p>Speaking before a gathering of 1,500 Muhammadiyah members last<br>\nnight, Amien said he had the right to criticize because<br>\nMuhammadiyah was an organization whose mission was to encourage<br>\npeople to do good and prevent them from committing misdeeds.<\/p>\n<p>\"I was advised to (make) my criticism ... vague but I couldn't<br>\nbecause this is an Islamic mission that cannot be done half-<br>\nheartedly,\" he said. \"This is about religion. I'm carrying out a<br>\nreligious mission.\"<\/p>\n<p>He said he made the criticism because he wanted to help<br>\nprevent the state's wealth being plundered, as the Constitution<br>\nmandates.<\/p>\n<p>\"What we see as good is not always seen as good by other<br>\npeople. So I resigned from ICMI. But my religion teaches me<br>\nthis,\" he said. (swe)<\/p>",
