American Corner opens in Yogya<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: Witnessed by Counselor of Public Affairs Charles N.
\nSilver of the U.S. Embassy to Indonesia, Rector of
\nYogyakarta Muhammadiyah University (UMY) Khoiruddin
\nBashori inaugurated on Saturday the American Corner, an on-campus
\nresource center.<\/p>\n
Established jointly by the university and the U.S. Embassy,
\nthe resource center aims to provide the public with accurate, up-
\nto-date information on various topics such as Islamic studies,
\nforeign policy, legislation, social issues, global issues,
\ndemocracy, human rights, economics and trade.<\/p>\n
Under the cooperation, Silver said the U.S. Embassy provided
\nbooks, on-line databases, computers, copiers and other hardware
\nto the center, while the UMY provided the space and staff.<\/p>\n
Silver added that in the long run, the Embassy also planned to
\nbring in speakers and develop education programs for the resource
\ncenter to encourage interaction and discussion between American
\nand Indonesian scholars.<\/p>\n
Director of the American Corner of UMY Endro Dwi Hatmanto
\nexpressed a hope that the center would help strengthen ties
\nbetween Indonesia and the U.S.<\/p>\n
Located on the second floor of the university library on Jl.
\nLingkar Barat, the American Corner of UMY is open to the public
\non weekdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.<\/p>\n
The American Corner of UMY is the second such center to be
\nestablished in Indonesia, after Jakarta. -- JP<\/p>",
