Amcor launches anti-dumping drive<\/p>\n
SYDNEY (AFP): Australian paper and packaging group Amcor Ltd.
\nhas launched an anti-dumping action against 14 nations, including
\nIndonesia, claiming that cheap imports have driven glossy paper
\nprices down $500 (US$373) a ton.<\/p>\n
Amcor subsidiary Australian Paper has named South Africa,
\nSouth Korea, Japan, Italy, Finland, Indonesia, Taiwan, Germany,
\nFrance, Sweden, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland and The Netherlands
\nin its action.<\/p>\n
It is asking the Australian Anti-Dumping Authority to impose a
\nduty on exporters that would lift the price of their paper up to
\nthe price charged in their domestic markets.<\/p>\n
\"We are facing up to substantial dumping - it's very
\npredatory,\" said Arthur Williamson, a spokesman for Amcor's
\nAustralian Paper subsidiary.<\/p>\n
Williamson said Australian Paper had alleged that the 14
\nnations were illegally dumping two-sided, coated, wood-free paper
\nsheets weighing 75 to 150 grams, which is commonly used in glossy
\nmagazines, posters and books.<\/p>\n
Williamson said in Thursday's Australian newspaper that the
\naverage price of such paper had collapsed from $1,850 a ton to
\n$1,350.<\/p>\n
This compared with $1,750 a ton being paid for relatively low-
\ngrade photocopying paper.<\/p>\n
He said the volume of some Asian paper imports had trebled due
\nto dumping.<\/p>\n
Australian Paper holds about 20 percent of the Australian
\nmarket for glossy paper, with imports accounting for the rest.<\/p>",
