'Ambon strife has economic roots'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Recent bloody incidents in the Maluku provincial
\ncapital, Ambon, have been caused by ongoing economic problems and
\nnot religious differences, Coordinating Minister for People's
\nWelfare Jusuf Kalla said on Monday.<\/p>\n
\"It is not about religion or religious differences anymore,\"
\nJusuf said at the State Palace, adding that the government was
\nscheduled to discuss economic conditions in Maluku soon.<\/p>\n
Strife-torn Maluku has been ravaged by a three-year sectarian
\nconflict that has claimed thousands of lives.<\/p>\n
Jusuf said that an issue that needed immediate attention was
\nthe high rate of unemployment in Maluku, which often caused
\nfriction between locals that led to violent brawls, and then
\nbloody clashes.<\/p>\n
He cited the July 25 clash between a driver and a local
\nhoodlum. A day later, a bomb exploded in Mardika, Ambon, causing
\n54 people to sustain severe injuries.<\/p>\n
\"There is a possibility that competition between rival gangs,
\nover which gets more 'security money' from locals, is growing
\nmore fierce,\" Jusuf said, stating that clashes were leading to
\nthe further destruction of infrastructure following
