Ambon remains restricted to foreigners<\/p>\n
AMBON: Despite the improving security condition in Ambon, the
\nlocal administration has yet to lift the restriction for
\nforeigners to enter the formerly conflict-torn province as it is
\nstill technically under a state of civil emergency.<\/p>\n
\"The decree banning foreigners from entering the province
\nremains as long as the province is still under a state of
\nemergency,\" Ambon immigration office chief Wiryono told The
\nJakarta Post on Saturday.<\/p>\n
He said his office had, in the past two months, denied entry
\nto 12 foreigners who had no clear purpose in visiting the
\nprovince, where conflict between Muslims and Christians has
\nkilled over 5,000 people since it broke out in January 1999.<\/p>\n
He, however, said foreign humanitarian workers were still
\nallowed to enter the province. Currently, 148 foreign
\nhumanitarian workers are in the province.<\/p>\n
Wiryono said those foreigners had the clearance from Ambon
\nstate of emergency administrator Sinyo Harri Sarundajang to
\nsupport the reconstruction of the province.<\/p>\n
The state of civil emergency was imposed in the province in
\n2000 following prolonged sectarian clashes. The central
\ngovernment is currently evaluating the possibility of lifting the
