        "content": "<p>Ambassador and press<\/p>\n<p>I was astonished to read a report in The Jakarta Post on July<br>\n14, 1995, attributing comments to me in a casual conversation<br>\nduring the lunch break at an Indonesian Institute of Sciences<br>\nseminar.<\/p>\n<p>In a discussion of the qualities needed by an Indonesian<br>\nambassador in Canberra, I was reported to have made a very<br>\nnegative judgment on the performance of Rear Admiral Roesman<br>\nNurjadin.<\/p>\n<p>I personally hold Pak (Mr) Roesman in the highest regard.<br>\nSoft-spoken and unfailingly courteous, Pak Roesman was a low-key<br>\nambassador who embodied the values often identified with the<br>\nJavanese. The point I was making, however, was that Pak Roesman&apos;s<br>\nnon-combative Javanese style did not equip him well to deal with<br>\naggressive Australian journalists who have no appreciation of<br>\nJavanese subtleties.<\/p>\n<p>It was Pak Roesman&apos;s approach to the Australian press which<br>\nwas &quot;quite hopeless&quot;, not his overall performance as an<br>\nambassador. I also did not intend to give the impression that Pak<br>\nRoesman normally said things that were untrue. My point was that<br>\nhe was not regarded as convincing by Australian journalists.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, the good relations enjoyed by both August<br>\nMarpaung and Sabam Siagian with the Australian press made it<br>\neasier to overcome the usual problems which inevitably arise<br>\nbetween neighboring countries.<\/p>\n<p>HAROLD CROUCH<\/p>\n<p>Canberra, Australia<\/p>",
