Alwi Shihab's 'killer nations'<\/p>\n
I was greatly astounded by the remark of our Minister of
\nForeign Affairs Dr. Alwi Shihab, regarding the controversy of an
\ninternational tribunal for Indonesian generals who allegedly
\nconducted war crimes. His remarks, as quoted in Republika daily
\non Dec. 8, contained two dangerously misleading, flawed ideas.<\/p>\n
He was quoted as saying that if the international tribunal for
\nthe generals was conducted, Indonesia would be placed on a par
\nwith countries like Rwanda and Kosovo, which have been labeled as
\n\"killer nations\".<\/p>\n
What a belligerently harsh statement. Anyone with sufficient
\nknowledge would easily discern that the term should not be
\ndesignated to a nation's people, but rather to a few blood-
\nthirsty individuals from a particular institution. I do not
\nbelieve they are all killers.<\/p>\n
I was wondering if Dr. Alwi, a top scholar of Islam, still
\nremembers a basic teaching of the religion: that all human beings
\n(including Jews, of course) are fundamentally hanif, or tend to
\nlead themselves in the direction of goodness.<\/p>\n
Second, Dr. Alwi evidently equates the alleged generals as
\nrepresentatives of Indonesian people (by the way, has he
\nconsulted the House of Representatives about what constitutes
\n\"representativeness\"?). Thus in his view, defending alleged
\ngenerals from international tribunals for the violation of human
\nrights means defending the people's interests. How fine is your
\nreasoning, Dr. Alwi!<\/p>\n
