Alwi briefs US on RI Muslims<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Former minister of foreign affairs Alwi Shihab has
\nrecently visited the United States to brief a couple of key
\nofficials on the state of radical Islam in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
During his American visit, Alwi, who is also a Muslim scholar,
\nmet with deputy defense secretary Paul Wolfowitz, who once served
\nas the U.S. ambassador to Indonesia, and an aide to President
\nGeorge W. Bush, Steve Hadley.<\/p>\n
\"They expressed their deep concern of the situation in
\nIndonesia, where religious sentiment can easily trigger an anti-
\nAmerica drive. I told them that the anger of Muslim people here
\nwas a result of the recent offensive by Israel on Palestine,\"
\nAlwi said after meeting with Coordinating Minister for Political
\nand Security Affairs Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Alwi, who now chairs the National Awakening Party co-founded
\nby former president Abdurrahman Wahid, joined Nahdlatul Ulama
\nchairman Hasyim Muzadi and Muhammadiyah chairman Syafiie Maarif
\nas Indonesian Muslim figures invited to the U.S. in the wake of
\nlast year's Muslim terrorist attacks.<\/p>\n
Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim country.<\/p>\n
Sjafiie is still in the U.S. and is scheduled to return home
