        "content": "<p>JAKARTA - A deadly accident involving the Antar Lintas Sumatera (ALS)\nbus and a fuel tanker truck on the Trans-Sumatra Highway in Musi Rawas\nUtara (Muratara), South Sumatra, on Wednesday (6\/5\/2026), has once again\nbecome a red mark for road safety in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>This tragic incident, reported to have claimed at least 16 lives, has\ndrawn sharp criticism from road safety observers.<\/p>\n<p>The Road Safety Association (RSA) assesses that the string of fatal\naccidents in public transport are not merely a matter of fate, but\nrather layered systemic failures.<\/p>\n<p>Rio Octaviano, Chairman of the RSA Supervisory Board, stated that\nfatal accidents often stem from an accumulation of unresolved issues,\nranging from infrastructure conditions, vehicle technical worthiness, to\nweak operational oversight.<\/p>\n<p>According to Rio, the regulations already specify very detailed task\ndivisions. For example, the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing\n(PUPR) for road aspects, the Ministry of Transportation for vehicle\nworthiness, the National Traffic Police Corps (Korlantas Polri) for law\nenforcement, and the roles of the Ministry of Health and Jasa Raharja in\npost-incident handling.<\/p>\n<p>However, the classic problem is the weak implementation and\ninter-agency coordination in the field. Rio emphasised that the\ngovernment often only reacts after major tragedies that capture public\nattention.<\/p>\n<p>Rio added that national data shows the majority of accidents occur in\nconditions considered \u201cnormal\u201d, such as straight roads and clear\nweather.
