Almond may become Bogor's plant<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): Almonds will probably be adopted formally as
\nBogor's \"characteristic plant\", an official says.<\/p>\n
\"Almond trees have long lined our sidewalks,\" M. Basit, the
\ntownship's spokesman, said earlier this week.<\/p>\n
He said the township was discussing the official adoption of
\nthe tree known as the Javanese almond as Bogor's very own plant.<\/p>\n
State Minister of Environment Sarwono Kusumaatmadja earlier
\nurged all regencies and townships to claim special plants and
\nanimals.<\/p>\n
Bogor, home of the Botanical Gardens, is famed for its almond
\nhandicraft. Crafters buy the almonds from those who pick the
\nfruits every morning along the roads.<\/p>\n
These souvenirs include rings and bracelets, and are often
\nfound in handicraft exhibitions.<\/p>\n
\"Our almond creations are sold in Japan and Europe,\" Basit
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The township started a tree planting program in 1994.<\/p>\n
The local \"One Million Trees\" project is being carried out in
\ncooperation with Bogor Institute of Agriculture and local women
\nand youth groups.<\/p>\n
\"If the trees grow, Bogor will be Almond Town,\" Basit said.
