Alleged vehicle thief shot dead<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): South Jakarta Police shot dead a man for
\nallegedly resisting arrest early Monday, after he was caught
\ntrying to steal a car parked in the Bukit Duri area in Tebet, an
\nofficer said.<\/p>\n
City Police spokesman Lt. Col. Zainuri Lubis, identified the
\nsuspect as Nata bin Pulung, believed to be a homeless man in the
\narea.<\/p>\n
Nata was shot in the head and chest, Lubis said.<\/p>\n
\"The suspect was shot after he was spotted by patrolling
\npolice officers jumping a fence at a parking lot near a shop-
\nhouse in Bukit Duri at 4:30 p.m.,\" Lubis said.<\/p>\n
Police said their presence interrupted Nata's plan to steal
\none of the cars.<\/p>\n
According to Lubis, the officers fired three warning shots in
\nthe air which Nata ignored.<\/p>\n
The suspect then attempted to flee the scene. Just as the
\npolice were about to arrest him, Nata attempted to assault one of
\nthe officers, Lubis said.<\/p>\n
\"The officer was not hurt as when Nata pulled out his sharp
\nweapon, the other officers gunned him down,\" Lubis said, adding
\nthat the sharp weapon and skeleton keys were seized from the dead
\nman.<\/p>\n
Nata was taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital in
\nCentral Jakarta for a postmortem examination. His body had yet to
\nbe claimed by relatives.<\/p>\n
His death raises the tally of criminals shot dead by law
\nenforcers this year to 28. (emf)<\/p>",
