Alleged pirates arrested<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): North Jakarta Police have arrested the alleged
\nmastermind of last week's attack on a yacht anchored in Jakarta
\nBay, North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
City Police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said yesterday
\nthat police shot the man, identified as Abu, in the foot because
\nhe attacked officers during the arrest at his house on Jl.
\nCilandak, Karawang, West Java, on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Two of Abu's accomplices were arrested earlier, while two
\nothers involved in the piracy are still at large, Aritonang said.<\/p>\n
He said Abu had served a one-year jail term in Kalianda
\nprison, Lampung, for a similar crime.<\/p>\n
Aritonang said information on Abu's whereabouts was acquired
\nfrom his arrested accomplices, Mar and MY.<\/p>\n
Aritonang said the Indonesian Coast and Sea Guard Unit
\narrested the two on Tuesday and handed them over to the North
\nJakarta Police.<\/p>\n
Abu and his four accomplices allegedly pirated the German
\nyacht M.S. Schleswig -- a tug boat converted into a pleasure
\nyacht -- which was anchored near the Horison Hotel in Ancol, on
\nJune 29.<\/p>\n
The five attacked navigator Peter Loos who was asleep onboard
\nat the time.<\/p>\n
Loos, who sustained severe injuries in the attack, was taken
\nto the MMC Hospital in Kuningan, South Jakarta. He was released
\nFriday.<\/p>\n
Richard Glattki, the German owner and captain of the yacht,
\nsaid he lost Rp 30 million (US$12,244) in the attack.<\/p>\n
Abu reportedly confessed to police that he stole the equipment
\nonboard, including an electric generator, telescope, a briefcase
\ncontaining four signal patterns, a pump, and a liquefied
\npetroleum gas tank. He left the yacht by motorboat.<\/p>\n
Police managed to recover some of the stolen equipment before
\nit was fenced, Aritonang said.<\/p>\n
Police also arrested two other men, Salim and Sukri, last week
\nin Kalibaru, North Jakarta, for allegedly buying some of the
\nstolen equipment.<\/p>\n
Glattki said he had dropped anchor in Jakarta Bay because he
\ncould not afford the high cost of mooring at Marina Ancol. (cst)<\/p>",
