Alleged motorcycle thieves nabbed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Police apprehended six alleged members of a gang of
\nmotorcycle thieves believed to have stolen hundreds of
\nmotorcycles since 1998. At least seven other gang members are
\nstill at large.<\/p>\n
A detective with the city police said on Tuesday officers
\nseized three homemade pistols, a dozen bullets and four
\nmotorcycles from the six suspects.<\/p>\n
Speaking from detention, alleged gang leader Rustam Effendy,
\nor Pendi, 38, said two or three members of the gang would pull up
\nalongside victims and threaten them with pistols.<\/p>\n
\"But we never injured the victims,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The gang operated six nights a week, taking Saturdays off,
\nbetween 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.<\/p>\n
Pendi said the stolen motorcycles were sold to middlemen for
\nbetween Rp 2 million (US$235) and Rp 3 million each.<\/p>\n
Their area of operation was Jl. Salemba and Jl. Gunung Sahari
\nin Central Jakarta, Jl. Ciledug Raya and Jl. Satrio in South
\nJakarta, and Jl. Kedoya in West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Five of the six suspects live in Tangerang, Banten, and three
\nof them work as public minivan drivers during the day.<\/p>\n
