The free burial programme run by the DKI Jakarta Provincial\nGovernment remains overshadowed by illegal levy practices in the field.\nMember of Commission D of the DKI Jakarta DPRD from the PKS faction,\nNabilah Aboe Bakar, admitted she still receives public complaints\nregarding levies deemed burdensome during the burial process.<\/p>\n
During a meeting discussing the Accountability Report for the\nRegional Budget Implementation with several regional apparatus\norganisations, Nabilah requested the DKI Jakarta Parks and Urban Forest\nAgency conduct a thorough evaluation of the free burial service at\npublic cemeteries owned by the provincial government.<\/p>\n
\u201cI also request an evaluation regarding free burials. Because it\nturns out in the field many still feel there are excessive illegal\nlevies. I might say this is the work of irresponsible individuals. Okay,\nthere are irresponsible individuals. And now the entire public knows\nthat public cemeteries should essentially be free,\u201d Nabilah said at the\nDKI Jakarta DPRD Building on Wednesday (17\/6).<\/p>\n
According to her, this has the potential to undermine the public\nservice programme the government has prepared to ease the burden on the\ncommunity. \u201cPlease, what is the follow-up from the Parks Agency\nregarding this matter? Do not let this become continuous neglect. It is\na pity for the community,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n
Responding to this, Head of the DKI Jakarta Parks and Urban Forest\nAgency, Fajar Sauri, acknowledged that his party still finds illegal\nlevy practices in the burial process. However, according to him, the\npattern currently found differs from before. Fajar said his party has\ntaken disciplinary action against internal individuals involved in the\nillegal levy practices.<\/p>\n
\u201cIndeed, we admit that we have been slowly curbing the illegal\nlevies. But the pattern is different. For our internal staff, thank God,\nthey have started to admit that it was a mistake,\u201d Fajar said. He\nrevealed that a number of findings in the field indicate the involvement\nof other parties who are not official burial officers. \u201cWhat we\nencounter is the involvement of RT and RW heads, thus giving them the\nfreedom to receive money outside of the burial staff,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
According to Fajar, this condition often causes misunderstandings\namong the public. This is because the heirs assume the levy comes from\ncemetery officers, whereas the money is received by other parties\noutside the cemetery management. \u201cIt has been proven that there are\nthose managing things outside the burial process, so the heirs think\nthose people are burial staff. Now, we must continue to investigate the\ncause,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The DPRD requested the DKI Provincial Government strengthen\nsupervision and enforcement against illegal levy practices so that the\nfree burial service can truly be felt by the community without undue\nadditional costs. This issue has become a concern because the demand for\nburial services in Jakarta continues to increase amid the limited\navailability of burial land.
