All the President's ministers make for a diverse team<\/p>\n

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has good reason to call his
\nteam of ministers the United Indonesia Cabinet, perhaps because
\nthey represent the country's diverse sociopolitical landscape.<\/p>\n
Susilo said upon revealing his Cabinet lineup that he had
\ntried to accommodate the aspirations of his supporters, and
\nacknowledged he could not satisfy all parties.<\/p>\n
Susilo was nominated as a presidential candidate by the
\nDemocratic Party (PD), the Crescent Star Party (PBB) and the
\nIndonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI). In the second round of
\nthe presidential election, the National Awakening Party (PKB),
\nthe Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) and the National Mandate Party
\n(PAN) joined forces to support him. The United Development Party
\n(PPP) joined late when it abandoned the coalition that was to
\nform an opposition bloc in the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n
To some people, the composition of the Cabinet signals new
\nhope. But, to others, it simply reflects a power sharing deal
\nbetween Susilo and political parties that supported his bid for
\nthe presidency.<\/p>\n
Some facts about the Cabinet:<\/p>\n
* Total members: 36, four of whom are women (Meutia Hatta, Mari
\nE. Pangestu, Siti Fadilah Supari, Sri Mulyani Indrawati)
\n* Old faces: There are five ministers who served in the previous
\ngovernment of president Megawati Soekarnoputri (Hassan Wirajuda,
\nYusril Ihza Mahendra, Purnomo Yusgiantoro, Bachtiar Chamsyah,
\nHatta Radjasa), and three under president Abdurrahman Wahid (Alwi
\nShihab, Bambang Sudibyo, Juwono Sudarsono).
\n* Military\/Police: Adm. (ret) Widodo A.S., Lt. Gen. (ret) M.
\nMa'ruf, Lt. Gen. (ret) Sudi Silalahi, Vice Adm. (ret). Freddy
\nNumberi, Brig. Gen. (ret) Taufiq Effendi.
\n* Politicians: Alwi (PKB), Bachtiar Chamsyah (PPP), Hatta (PAN),
\nFahmi Idris (ex-Golkar), Bambang Sudibyo (PAN), Suryadharma
\n(PPP), Saifullah Yusuf (PKB), Yusril (PBB), M.S. Kaban (PBB),

\nCabinet. In terms of ethnicity, Javanese dominate with 12:

\nSudibyo, Abdul Rahman Saleh, Widodo A.S., Maftuh Basyuni,

\ncontributes four ministers: Suryadharma, Aburizal, Marie, Fahmi.
\nNorth Sumatra has two: Kaban and Sudi Silalahi. South Sulawesi
\nhas two: Alwi Shihab and Hamid Awaluddin. Nangroe Aceh Darussalam
\nalso has two: Sofyan Djalil and Bachtiar Chamsyah.<\/p>\n
* At 65, Maftuh Basyuni is the oldest minister, while Saifullah
\nis the youngest at 40. Fifteen ministers are aged between 50 and
\n60 years, 11 ministers are aged between 40 and 49, and 10
\nministers are above 60.<\/p>\n
* Based on religion, 32 ministers are Muslims, two are Catholics
\n(Purnomo and Marie), one is Protestant (Freddy Numberi), and one
\nis Hindu (Jero Wacik).<\/p>\n
