All stakeholders must eradicate court corruption<\/p>\n

Anticorruption activist and former noted justice said on Thursday
\nthat all stakeholders in the country must take drastic measures
\nto stop rampant corruption in courts.<\/p>\n
Corruption in courts is the most serious problem that needs
\nattention ahead of corruption in political parties or the police,
\naccording to a recent opinion survey by Berlin-based Transparency
\nInternational.<\/p>\n
\"The government must lead such anticorruption measures,\"
\nactivist Albert Hasibuan said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
According to him, the government must commit to the
\neradication of corruption starting with anticorruption measures
\nin courts.<\/p>\n
Through the Attorney General's Office, the government should
\npersistently eradicate court mafia including judges, prosecutors
\nand lawyers, Albert said.<\/p>\n
Similarly, the government must give rewards to clean and
\nsuccessful legal enforcers in curbing rampant corruption.<\/p>\n
He also said it was important to have two clean figures to
\nlead the Supreme Court and the Attorney General's Office
\nrespectively to help ensure that corruption in courts would be
\neradicated.<\/p>\n
With the government leading anticorruption measures, other
\nstakeholders like lawyers and citizens could contribute to the
\neradication of rampant corruption in the courts.<\/p>\n
\"People and lawyers must stop bribing prosecutors and judges,\"
\nhe said. \"Our permissive mentality to tolerate corruption must be
\neliminated.\"<\/p>\n
Transparency International's findings that corruption in the
\ncourts should be the first to be resolved in Indonesia was based
\non a survey of around 1,000 people. The results departed from the
\ntrend found in most other countries surveyed, which
\noverwhelmingly singled out political parties as the institution
\nthat needed the most attention.<\/p>\n
In Indonesia, nearly one in three picked the courts of law as
\nthe worst culprits; political parties came second, utilities and
\npolice third and fourth respectively.<\/p>\n
Early this year, the Indonesian Corruption Watch (ICW) said in
\na book titled Opening the Curtains on the Court Mafia that
\ncorruption in the judiciary involved all law enforcers --
\npolicemen, prosecutors, judges and supreme court justices amid
\nthe haphazard reform movement.<\/p>\n
\"It is right to say that the judiciary is the true winner in
\nthe corruption competition in the country,\" it said.<\/p>\n
Former Justice Benjamin Mangkoedilaga concurred with Albert.<\/p>\n
He said the government must establish favorable conditions to
\neradicate corruption in courts.<\/p>\n
\"Reward and punishment for legal enforcers is important to
\neradicate corruption,\" he said.<\/p>\n
While punishment for corruptors is clearly stated under the
\nanticorruption law, rewards for legal enforcers have not yet been
\nadequate, he said.<\/p>\n
Benjamin said the Supreme Court must continuously reform
\nitself by dismissing corrupt judges as it did recently.<\/p>\n
\"This effort will create a trustworthy legal institution,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"People should also stop using short cuts by bribing judges to
\nwin cases,\" he added.<\/p>",
