All schools to be accredited<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The Minister of National Education Abdul Malik Fajar
\nswore in on Tuesday 23 members of the National School
\nAccreditation Body (BAS) whose main task is to appraise the
\nquality of schools at all levels nationwide.<\/p>\n
"It's embarrassing but we have to be honest about our quality
\nof education. We may say that our education is growing in terms
\nof number of schools, but it's not innovative," he said to
\nreporters after the ceremony.<\/p>\n
The problem, he said, had prompted the government to set up an
\ninstitution to ensure that schools met national standards
\nthroughout the country.<\/p>\n
Following the national BAS, provinces, regencies, and
\nmunicipalities will set up their own BAS. The BAS' offices in
\nregencies and municipalities will evaluate preschools to junior
\nhigh schools while BAS' provincial offices will evaluate senior
\nhigh schools.<\/p>\n
They would then report to the national BAS, which will give
\nrecommendations to improve the quality of education.<\/p>\n
The accreditation body's members -- both national and local --
\nwill be selected from communities, besides representatives from
