All reclamation land allocated<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja said yesterday that
\nthe entire 2,700 hectares of land designated for reclamation in
\nNorth Jakarta had been parceled out among private and state-owned
\ndevelopers.<\/p>\n
Surjadi said the reclamation project was part of his
\nadministration's \"Back to the North\" campaign to encourage
\ndevelopment in the northern part of the capital.<\/p>\n
He said that North Jakarta was once the main center of
\neconomic activity in Jakarta because of the presence of the Sunda
\nKelapa fishing port and Tanjung Priok Port.<\/p>\n
\"We will transform North Jakarta back into a major business
\nand recreation center while preserving the various historical
\nsites in the area,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The administration has imposed restrictions on future
\ndevelopment in South Jakarta, considered a vital water catchment
\narea for the capital. Before the reclamation idea the city had
\ndirected all new development toward the east and west.<\/p>\n
Surjadi said some of the reclamation projects had already
\nmoved beyond reclaiming land and into the physical construction
\nstage.<\/p>\n
Among the contractors licensed are PT Mandira Permai, PT
\nManggala Krida Yudha, PT ISMAC, PT Jaladri Karyika Eka Paksi and
\nPT Kapuk Naga Indah.<\/p>\n
Manggala Krida, which is owned by President Soeharto's
\nyoungest daughter Siti Hutami Endang Adiningsih, is developing
\nthe Ancol Baru reclamation project in cooperation with
\nthe state-owned port management company PT Pelindo II.<\/p>\n
Manggala Krida reclaimed 500 hectares which it is developing
\ninto a business, commercial and residential area.<\/p>\n
The Pantai Indah Kapuk waterfront project, carried out by
\nMandira Permai, is expected to be finished in 2002.<\/p>\n
Another project in Kapuk Naga is reclaiming 674 hectares. The
\nenvironmental impact assessment is still being completed. It is
\nbeing developed by Kapuk Naga Indah, a subsidiary of the Salim
\nbusiness group.<\/p>\n
Surjadi said the reclamation projects aimed at improving the
\ncity's appearance and boosting the prosperity of Jakartans.<\/p>\n
He said the Jakarta Tower, a 558-meter-high project in
\nKemayoran district, on which work began this week, was also part
\nof the administration's program to develop North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The tower would complement the reclamation projects, he said.<\/p>\n
When completed, the Jakarta Tower will be the highest such
