All lecturers to have doctorates<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: In a bid to improve the quality of its graduates,
\nstate-owned Syarif Hidayatullah Islamic University is to require
\nall of its lecturers to have doctorates in the future, an
\nofficial said.<\/p>\n
Addressing those present at the university's 54th graduation
\nceremony on Saturday, rector Azyumardi Azra said that due to the
\nrecent upgrade in the college's status, the new requirements for
\nlecturer were needed.<\/p>\n
\"We expect that in the near future, we'll only have holders of
\ndoctorates teaching in our college,\" Azyumardi said, while adding
\nthat it was important to also improve the quality of the
\nstudents.<\/p>\n
The university was an institute before it was upgraded last
\nJune.<\/p>\n
A total of 495 bachelor's degrees, 28 master's degrees and 13

Hamzah not to attend Hatta commemoration<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Vice President Hamzah Haz will not attend a ceremony to
\nmark the 100 anniversary of Indonesian founding father Mohammad
\nHatta in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, next week, a report said.<\/p>\n
\"Due to his tight schedule, Pak Hamzah will not be able to
\nattend the commemoration of the country's first vice president in
\nthe late statesman's hometown,\" said organizing committee
\nspokesman Yuen Karnova in Padang on Saturday.<\/p>\n
He said that originally Hamzah was slated to open a series of
\nseminars and exhibitions as part of the commemoration.<\/p>\n
The Vice President was also initially slated to open a new
\ntraditional market in Amur, Agam regency, after the ceremony.<\/p>\n
\"We'll have to reschedule everything. Hopefully by Monday
\nwe'll know for sure which officials will attend the event,\" Yuen

Accountants wanted for home affairs ministry<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The Ministry of Home Affairs needs at least 1,000
\nadditional accountants to support the ministry's Inspectorate
\nGeneral in supervising the finances of local governments
\nnationwide.<\/p>\n
Ministry Inspector-General Sarundayang said on Saturday that
\nthe government would be able to hire the required 1,000
\naccountants by 2010.<\/p>\n
\"Should a particular region have more than enough accountants,
\nthey should report it to us as we need them for other places
\n(regions),\" Sarundayang said.<\/p>\n
He also said that the vacant positions would be open to
\nbachelor's degree holders from accountancy schools.<\/p>\n
The official further said that the ministry would cooperate
\nwith the Development Finance Comptroller (BPKP) to ensure
\ntransparency in the state finances.<\/p>\n
\"The forms of collaboration will be set out in Memorandums of
\nUnderstanding to be signed in each area,\" Sarundayang said.<\/p>\n
Currently, the BPKP is only able to audit some 30 percent of
\nthe total financial transactions of each region due to a lack of
