Ali Yafie installed to head MUI<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Senior scholar Ali Yafie was installed by
\nMinister of Religious Affairs A. Malik Fadjar on Thursday as the
\nchairman of the Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI), replacing Hasan
\nBasri who died last November.<\/p>\n
According to deputy chairman Amidhan, Ali's tenure will last
\nuntil the council's congress in July 2000, Antara said.<\/p>\n
\"After Kiai Hasan Basri died, the executive board agreed to
\nappoint Kiai Ali Yafie acting chairman,\" Amidhan said after a
\nclosed council meeting. His colleague, Ismail Hasan, said the
\nmove was in line with the council's wishes.<\/p>\n
The meeting at Hotel Indonesia also effected the installation
\nof the National Sharia Council, which will deal with economic
\nissues in accordance with Islamic law.<\/p>\n
The Muslim clerics are scheduled to meet on Friday with
\nPresident B.J. Habibie and Armed Forces Commander Gen. Wiranto.<\/p>\n
The government established the council in 1975. Under its
\nfirst chairman Haji Malik Abdul Karim Amarullah, a prominent
\nMuslim scholar who was more popularly known as Buya (Father)
\nHamka, the council became influential in the campaign to bridge
\nthe gap between Muslims and the New Order regime under Soeharto.<\/p>\n
In a related development, Kompas daily presented to Ali Yafie
\non Thursday Rp 583 million, part of the Rp 1.28 billion in
\nhumanitarian funds it raised in cooperation with the council.<\/p>\n
The daily's general manager, Jakob Oetama, made the
\npresentation to Ali at a separate occasion. The money was raised
