Ali Sadikin summoned over Soebadio's book<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Attorney General's Office will question
\ngovernment critic Ali Sadikin today in its investigation of
\nanother critic, Soebadio Sastrosatomo, whose book was banned
\nrecently.<\/p>\n
Ali's lawyer, Munir, said his client had received a summons
\nThursday. Ali was governor of Jakarta from 1966 to 1977. He then
\nbecame the leader of Petisi 50, a group of government critics.<\/p>\n
On March 4, Attorney General Singgih banned the 22-page book,
\nNew Era, New Leader: Badio Rejects the New Order Regime's
\nEngineering, written by Soebadio, a former leader of the defunct
\nIndonesian Socialist Party. Singgih said the book could provoke
\nunrest and tarnish the government's image.<\/p>\n
Investigators at the Attorney General's Office questioned
\nSoebadio on March 6.<\/p>\n
Republika daily has quoted the 79-year-old as saying that the
\nnew leaders did not meet the standard of leadership set by
\nindependence fighters.<\/p>\n
Soebadio said President Soeharto's New Order administration
\nwas more interested in power than people's sovereignty. "Those
\nwho disagreed with the New Order were arrested," Soebadio was
\nquoted by Republika as saying.<\/p>\n
Soebadio said he had sent copies of his book to Ali Sadikin,
\nwho had asked to reprint the book, and former diplomat M. Yusuf
\nRonodipuro who had asked for 10 copies to be sent to a foundation
\nof former independence fighters, Yayasan Dewan Harian Angkatan
\n45.<\/p>\n
Munir questioned whether the summons was legal because it was
\nissued by the Attorney General's Office's Center for Intelligence
\nOperations.<\/p>\n
"The intelligence operations center has no right to summons
\npeople, because it is only an instrument to help the Attorney
\nGeneral's Office to collect data," he said.<\/p>\n
"Only the Attorney General's deputies for special crimes and
\ngeneral crimes have the authority to issue summons," Munir said.<\/p>\n
He said the summons had failed to specify the capacity in
\nwhich Ali Sadikin would be questioned. (05)<\/p>",
