        "content": "<p>Ali Sadikin summoned over Soebadio&apos;s book<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Attorney General&apos;s Office will question<br>\ngovernment critic Ali Sadikin today in its investigation of<br>\nanother critic, Soebadio Sastrosatomo, whose book was banned<br>\nrecently.<\/p>\n<p>Ali&apos;s lawyer, Munir, said his client had received a summons<br>\nThursday. Ali was governor of Jakarta from 1966 to 1977. He then<br>\nbecame the leader of Petisi 50, a group of government critics.<\/p>\n<p>On March 4, Attorney General Singgih banned the 22-page book,<br>\nNew Era, New Leader: Badio Rejects the New Order Regime&apos;s<br>\nEngineering, written by Soebadio, a former leader of the defunct<br>\nIndonesian Socialist Party. Singgih said the book could provoke<br>\nunrest and tarnish the government&apos;s image.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators at the Attorney General&apos;s Office questioned<br>\nSoebadio on March 6.<\/p>\n<p>Republika daily has quoted the 79-year-old as saying that the<br>\nnew leaders did not meet the standard of leadership set by<br>\nindependence fighters.<\/p>\n<p>Soebadio said President Soeharto&apos;s New Order administration<br>\nwas more interested in power than people&apos;s sovereignty. &quot;Those<br>\nwho disagreed with the New Order were arrested,&quot; Soebadio was<br>\nquoted by Republika as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Soebadio said he had sent copies of his book to Ali Sadikin,<br>\nwho had asked to reprint the book, and former diplomat M. Yusuf<br>\nRonodipuro who had asked for 10 copies to be sent to a foundation<br>\nof former independence fighters, Yayasan Dewan Harian Angkatan<br>\n45.<\/p>\n<p>Munir questioned whether the summons was legal because it was<br>\nissued by the Attorney General&apos;s Office&apos;s Center for Intelligence<br>\nOperations.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The intelligence operations center has no right to summons<br>\npeople, because it is only an instrument to help the Attorney<br>\nGeneral&apos;s Office to collect data,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Only the Attorney General&apos;s deputies for special crimes and<br>\ngeneral crimes have the authority to issue summons,&quot; Munir said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the summons had failed to specify the capacity in<br>\nwhich Ali Sadikin would be questioned.
