Ali Mazi passes public scrutiny<\/p>\n

The Southeast Sulawesi gubernatorial election committee ignored
\npublic objections to Ali Mazi, who won the election last week.
\nAli and his electoral partner Yusran Silondae passed the three-
\nday public scrutiny and are expected to be sworn in as governor
\nand deputy governor, respectively, on Dec. 23, 2002.<\/p>\n
The chairman of the election committee, Andrey Djufri, said
\nthat despite public objections, the committee had not found
\nstrong legal grounds to annul the results of the gubernatorial
\nelection held on Nov. 21, 2002.<\/p>\n
\"The committee has decided to continue the succession process
\nuntil the installment of the elect governor and elect deputy
\ngovernor,\" Antara news agency quoted him as saying here on
\nThursday.<\/p>\n
Andrey, a former government prosecutor, conceded that the
\ncommittee received eight objections against the elect governor
\nfrom the public, but that they did not enclose any evidence that
\ncould be used to annul the election results.<\/p>\n
He said the eight letters of objection contained allegations
\nof bribery against Ali.<\/p>\n
He revealed that the Kalo Sara Youth Foundation put forth two
\nwitnesses, who made an official statement that they saw Ali
\ntransfer two bank notes for the amounts of Rp 50 million and Rp
\n40 million respectively, as compensation to Golkar Party
\nlegislator La Upe Rasyid on Oct. 27, 2002.<\/p>\n
\"We could not follow up the case because La Upe went missing
\nfollowing the gubernatorial election, so that the election
\ncommittee cannot conclude that Ali is involved in money
\npolitics,\" he said. He also admitted the local police were still
\ninvestigating a case of fraud that involved Ali.<\/p>\n
Ali was also rumored to have a second wife, but according to
\nAndrey, such a clause was not included in the list of violations
\nthat could annul the gubernatorial election results.<\/p>\n
\"The election results will be annulled if the police find Ali
\nguilty in the bribery and fraud cases,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The police were involved in a clash with students and youths
\nwho protested against Ali and Yusron, who were allegedly involved
\nin money politics and other crimes when the gubernatorial
\nelection was held.<\/p>\n
Eleven demonstrators are still being held at the police
\ndetention house in Kendari to wait for further investigation.<\/p>\n
Kendari Police Chief, Adj. Sr. Comr. Sumaryoto, said the 11
\ndetainees were demonstrators who opposed Ali for his alleged
\ninvolvement in money politics.<\/p>\n
\"They were arrested because they used anarchism and violence
\nin which an antiriot police personnel was seriously injured,\" he
\nsaid, adding he has received many telephone calls asking him to
\nrelease the detainees.<\/p>\n
Outgoing governor La Ode Kaimoeddin said Adel Berty, who was
\ndefeated in the gubernatorial election, had to abandon his post
\nas Kolaka regent for his participation in the gubernatorial
\nelections.<\/p>\n
\"The Home Minister has delivered a letter, allowing Adel to
\nrun his candidacy to the election with the condition he is
\nunseated from his position as Kolaka regent,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Ali won a major victory in the election while Adel gained only
\nsix votes.<\/p>",
