TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Algeria severed diplomatic ties with the United\nArab Emirates on Thursday, citing what it described as \u201cprovocative and\nhostile acts.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to DW, the Algerian Defense Ministry said the country would\nclose its airspace to the UAE beginning on Friday.<\/p>\n
However, commercial flights to and from Algiers will be allowed to\ncontinue until the end of 2026.<\/p>\n
Relations between the two countries have been strained for years over\nthe UAE\u2019s expanding influence in northern and western Africa.<\/p>\n
What did Algeria and the UAE say about the decision?<\/p>\n
The Algerian Foreign Ministry said that it had made the decision\n\u201cafter exhausting all avenues to preserve bilateral relations\u201d with the\nGulf country.<\/p>\n
It added that the UAE had \u201cpersisted in its actions, reaching a point\nwhere they could no longer be considered acceptable or tolerable.\u201d<\/p>\n
Algiers said it had given the UAE\u2019s ambassador 48 hours to comply\nwith the decision to cut ties.<\/p>\n
The Emirati Foreign Ministry said it hoped the decision would be\ntemporary.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe UAE expresses hope that this decision will be temporary, in a\nmanner that preserves the fraternal ties between the two brotherly\npeoples,\u201d the ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n
It said that it \u201caffirms the UAE\u2019s appreciation for the brotherly\nAlgerian people and its pride in the bonds that unite the two peoples,\nparticularly through the Algerian community residing in the UAE and\nAlgerian visitors.\u201d<\/p>\n
Following the announcement, Anwar Gargash, the diplomatic advisor to\nUAE leader Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, said that diplomatic relations\nshould be based on \u201crationality, communication and clarity of interests\u201d\nrather than \u201criddles and signals that require decoding.\u201d<\/p>\n
He did not explicitly mention Algeria in his post on X.<\/p>\n
What are the tensions between Algeria and the UAE?<\/p>\n
Algeria has in the past accused Abu Dhabi of working to destabilize\ncountries in northern Africa and the Sahel such as Libya, Mali, and\nSudan.<\/p>\n
The UAE has been accused of supporting the RSF paramilitary in\nSudan\u2019s civil war, a charge it denies.<\/p>\n
It also backs former warlord Khalifa Haftar\u2019s Tobruk-based\nadministration in eastern Libya, a rival to the UN-recognized government\nin Tripoli.<\/p>\n
In July, Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboune harshly criticized\nthe UAE for its influence in other countries, saying \u201cwherever they set\nfoot, blood flows.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want them to stay away, so that blood does not flow in our\ncountry.\u201d<\/p>\n
Algeria also severed its diplomatic ties with neighboring Morocco in\n2021, accusing Rabat of supporting Amazigh separatists in the coastal\nKabylia region and amid longstanding tensions over the territory of\nWestern Sahara.<\/p>\n
