Alcohol stickers are overpriced: Producers<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The row between liquor producers and a private
\nfirm trying to control the industry through compulsory labeling
\nis intensifying.<\/p>\n
Hatta Arpan, chairman of the Association of Alcoholic Beverage
\nProducers, on Monday accused the company of charging higher
\nprices for the stickers of alcoholic beverages sold in Central
\nJava, violating the ruling of the governor.<\/p>\n
He said the governor's ruling states that the price of
\nstickers for drinks with an alcohol content of less than five
\npercent is Rp 75 (3.5 U.S. cent) per bottle or can of less than
\n500 milliliters\/cubic centimeters.<\/p>\n
"However, the private firm which controls the labeling,
\ncharges Rp 112.50 per bottle," Hatta said, referring to PT
\nArbamass Multi Invesco, which had been given the authority to
\nsupervise the distribution of alcoholic beverages throughout the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
Executives of Arbamass said recently that the supervision is
\nconducted through the sales of stickers which the company sells
\nto beverage producers.<\/p>\n
Without the stickers, alcoholic drinks cannot be sold or
\ndistributed legally, said Emir Baramuli of Arbamass.<\/p>\n
Hatta noted that the price of stickers for drinks with an
\nalcohol content of over 20 percent, according to the governor's
\nruling, is Rp 200 per bottle of less than 500 milliliters, while
\nArbamass charges Rp 300.<\/p>\n
"We actually support the central governor's ruling on the
\nlabeling of liquor. However, I am unhappy with choice of the
\nlabeling authority being given to a private company, which
\ncharges higher prices," Hatta said, Antara reported in Semarang,
\nCentral Java.<\/p>\n
Hatta noted that Arbamass also charges higher prices for
\nstickers in other provinces which the company already controls.<\/p>\n
Arbamass claims that it already controls the distribution of
\nliquor in East Java, West Kalimantan, Irian Jaya and South
\nSulawesi.<\/p>\n
Hatta said that members of his association will not pay
\nanything to Arbamass until the issue of its legality to control
\nthe liquor distribution is settled.<\/p>\n
He complained about the circular letter from Arbamass which
\nstated that starting next month no alcoholic drink can be sold or
\ndistributed legally in Central Java without the stickers from the
