Alcatel wins RP's phone contract<\/p>\n
MANILA (AFP): Germany's Alcatel AG, a unit of Alcatel-Alsthom
\nof France, won a 500,000-dollar telecoms contract in the
\nPhilippines, German Post and Telecommunications Minister Wolfgang
\nBoetsch said yesterday.<\/p>\n
The contract involved the installation of 500 telephone lines
\nthe southern Philippine island of Camiguin, said the minister,
\nwho is visiting Manila.<\/p>\n
The Philippine government project, set to be implemented not
\nlater than next month, is partly funded by German loans and
\ngrants, Boetsch told reporters after a meeting with his
\nPhilippine counterpart Amado Lagdameo.<\/p>\n
Lagdameo said Manila was seeking additional funding from
\nGermany for similar facilities in underserved areas of the
\narchipelago.<\/p>\n
Boetsch called on President Fidel Ramos and delivered a speech
\nbefore members of the European Chamber of Commerce here Tuesday.<\/p>\n
In his speech, Boetsch called for global deregulation of
\ntelecommunications services.<\/p>\n
"By liberal I mean here that foreign companies likewise have
\naccess to the relevant domestic market and are treated in exactly
\nthe same way as the domestic companies," he said.<\/p>\n
"Liberalization that allows competition solely among national
\ncompanies is liberalization that has lost its way."<\/p>",
