Alcatel continues to support RI telecommunications<\/p>\n
Convinced that Indonesia will soon be on its journey toward
\nrecovery, Alcatel has never changed its commitment to this
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
And it should not be surprising at all.<\/p>\n
The country's huge population and the vast geographical area
\nrepresent a significant market for this global telecommunications
\ncompany, which has been a leading supplier of communications
\nsystems to local state-owned and private sector customers. In
\naddition, Alcatel's track record for the 27 years of its
\noperation in Indonesia is impressive.<\/p>\n
From the construction of the 10,000-km-long digital microwave
\ntrunk network spanning the islands of Sumatra, Java, Nusa
\nTenggara and Sulawesi to the installation of the Intelligent
\nNetwork (IN) that enables Indosat's customers to charge their
\ninternational calls directly on their Citibank Visa cards. From
\nthe introduction of the International Direct Dialing (IDD) of
\nIndosat to the 500,000 lines network infrastructure for GSM
\ncellular phone services operated by Satelindo to PT Telkom's
\nundersea fiber optic cable from Jakarta to Surabaya.<\/p>\n
Indeed, there are not many companies in the world that have
\nthe capability to offer such a complete range of
\ntelecommunications products and expertise as Alcatel. It has been
\ndelivering microwave and fiber optic backbones, digital cellular
\nmobile telephony, undersea links, satellites and other turnkey
\nsolutions. It has introduced technological breakthroughs such as
\nSynchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH), the GSM mobile telephony
\nstandard, the Intelligent Network, and the Fiber-in-the-Loop that
\nis available to PT Telkom's customers in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
With such a long list of major involvement in the development
\nof the Indonesian telecommunications sector, Alcatel has
\ndemonstrated its solid commitment to Indonesia despite the
\ncurrent crisis. \"We have always taken a long-term view of
\nIndonesia. We see the current economic slowdown as an opportunity
\nto consolidate and strengthen the basis of our activities here,\"
\nsaid John Wilkinson, President Director of PT Alcatel Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The company has continued to invest in the development of its
\nhuman resources by providing training, both inside and outside
\nthe country, and by sending them away for overseas missions.
\nCurrently, a number of their local technical engineers are
\nassigned to work on various projects in Australia, Europe and the
\nMiddle East.<\/p>\n
As the Internet explosion brings countries throughout Asia
\ninto a global IP network, it is logical to expect that Indonesia
\nwill move in the same direction. Therefore, many of the future
\ntechnologies are going to be IP-based, and it is definitely going
\nto change many customers' requirements. To anticipate these
\nchanges, Alcatel has implemented a comprehensive strategy, in
\nwhich the thrust of its activities is in the IP and data
\nsolutions.<\/p>\n
The recent acquisitions of Assured Access, Xylan and Packet
\nEngines, three U.S. companies actively involved in developing
\nInternet technologies, are proof of Alcatel's strong focus on the
\nInternet. To further strengthen its key position in the IP
\nmarket, the company has even established a separate Internet
\nDivision, integrating the unmatched resources of Assured Access
\nand Packet Engines with Alcatel's own.<\/p>\n
In the area of Internet access technology, Alcatel is already
\nthe leader of Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL). With
\nthis technology, subscribers can enjoy 200 times faster access
\nthan today's standard analog modem. As a testimony of Alcatel's
\nleadership in this field, Singapore Telecom's Magix is able to
\ndeliver interactive multimedia services to 98 percent of the
\nSingapore population using Alcatel's ADSL.<\/p>\n
Today, the company, which is present in over 130 countries
\naround the world, controls over 35 percent of the world ADSL
\nmarket and 52 percent of the U.S. market. In Indonesia, a field
\ntrial of ADSL was successfully conducted with Divisi RisTI, the
\nR&D arm of PT Telkom, last year. It is expected that in a few
\nyears' time the interactive multimedia technology will also
\nbecome available to Indonesian subscribers.<\/p>\n
Alcatel's Internet initiative is not limited only to ADSL.
\nRecently, the company unveiled its Alcatel 2ip concept. It
\nencompasses a broad range of powerful, next generation,
\nintegrated Internet technology for established as well as new
\nnetwork operators. It includes the 2ip-Family of products and the
\n2ip-Ready program that will bring IP technologies to customers
\nwho need modular technologies capable of offering specific
\napplications as well as integrated solutions.<\/p>\n
To move to a higher level and to provide reliable Internet
\ninfrastructure that can be accessed from anywhere in the world,
\nAlcatel has also initiated the construction of SkyBridge project.
\nPresently, it is the only broadband satellite-based network that
\nwill deliver broadband interactive services, including high speed
\nInternet access, telework, multimedia entertainment and education
\nservices.<\/p>\n
To address the needs of large and medium enterprises, Alcatel
\noffers Alcatel 4400 PBX, the world's first IP-PCX, an IP-powered
\nPrivate Communications Exchange for integrated enterprise
\nvoice\/data and fixed\/mobile communications. Furthermore, thanks
\nto the synergy between Xylan and Alcatel, the latter can now
\noffer superior portfolio of data switching equipment for
\nenterprises as well as the forthcoming traffic aggregation
\nequipment for service providers.<\/p>\n
In the consumer market, its One-Touch GSM family of mobile
\nphones are known for their durability and advanced features and
\nare targeted at everyone from teenagers to executives. Alcatel
\nhas been in the front line in developing screenphones, which
\nenable cellular phone users to enjoy various value-added
\nfunctions such as wireless e-mail access, data communication and
\npersonal organizer. A version of its One Touch Pocket mobile
\nphone even has a built-in Web surfing capability. In fact,
\nAlcatel aptly recognized the wishes of teenage customers and
\noffers the best-selling One Touch Easy, the first colorful mobile
\nphone to appear on the market in 1997.<\/p>\n
