Albright stars as 'Evita' for ASEAN<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (AP): In a command performance, a playful Madeleine
\nAlbright delivered a rendition Tuesday of Don't cry for me ..., a
\nspoof the U.S. secretary of state had sung to wow her foreign
\nminister friends at a dinner.<\/p>\n
Flying from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to this city-state for a
\none-day visit, Albright entertained her staff and the traveling
\npress corps by reprising her Monday night "maiden performance on
\nan Asian stage."<\/p>\n
Albright had performed in one of 19 skits during the
\nAssociation of Southeast Asian nations dinner. The only thing
\nmissing in the airplane revival was her black dress and a red
\norchid in her hair.<\/p>\n
"I had a good time," Albright said, raising her arms in the
\nstyle of the heroine of the musical, Evita, which featured the
\nsong "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina."<\/p>\n
Clearing her throat, Albright demonstrated her technique.<\/p>\n
"Don't cry for me ASEANies," she sang.<\/p>\n
"They're gonna turn all this into a movie<\/p>\n
"Starring Madonna<\/p>\n
"As Madeline Albright<\/p>\n
"And Jackie Chan<\/p>\n
"As Dr. Mahathir<\/p>\n
"They'll film a cliff-hanger<\/p>\n
"From the Sunway monorail."<\/p>\n
Albright and Malaysia Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad clashed
\nMonday over human rights and falling Southeast Asia currencies
\nafter he blamed American businessman George Soros for
\nmanipulating the market.<\/p>\n
Actor Jackie Chan, of course, battles with the bad guys in
\naction movies.<\/p>\n
Satirizing the tiffs, Albright warbled:<\/p>\n
"I came here to talk to your leaders<\/p>\n
"But they were all on the golf course<\/p>\n
"So I went back to<\/p>\n
"Sunway Laguna<\/p>\n
"And called George Soros<\/p>\n
"Talked market forces<\/p>\n
"Hatched a conspiracy<\/p>\n
"The rest is history."<\/p>\n
Albright spokesman Nicholas Burns assured reporters the
\nSoutheast Asian diplomats didn't take offense at her performance,
\nand in fact gave her a standing ovation before she had sung a
\nword.<\/p>\n
"She's a ham, a natural born comedienne," Burns said. "They
\ndidn't really know her before she came here. And she was pretty
\ntough on them during their meetings, so I think they liked seeing
\nher softer side."<\/p>\n
As for the other countries' skits, Burns said the Russians'
\nwas among the best, with Foreign Minister Yevgeni Primakov and
\ncompany singing Moscow Nights while dressed in striped sailor
\nuniforms of the Black Sea Fleet.<\/p>\n
"Russkies are your friends!" they sang.<\/p>\n
