        "content": "<p>Alatas receives Philippine award<\/p>\n<p>MANILA (AP): Indonesian Foreign Minister Ali Alatas (see<br>\npicture on left) received one of the Philippines' most<br>\nprestigious awards on Monday for his role in the forging of a<br>\npeace pact between the Manila government and Muslim rebels.<\/p>\n<p>President Joseph Estrada presented the Sikatuna Award,<br>\nManila's highest award for diplomats, to Alatas at the Malacanang<br>\npresidential palace.<\/p>\n<p>\"I am greatly honored,\" Alatas said after the ceremony,<br>\ndescribing the award as an honor for all people who have worked<br>\nfor peace, independence and friendship.<\/p>\n<p>Alatas was chairman of a committee of Organization of Islamic<br>\nConference member countries that brokered peace talks between<br>\nManila and the Moro National Liberation Front, once the country's<br>\nlargest Muslim separatist group.<\/p>\n<p>The peace accord, signed in Sept. 1996, ended a quarter-<br>\ncentury of separatist insurrection by the MNLF that killed more<br>\nthan 120,000 people in the southern region of Mindanao.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the most crucial negotiations for the peace pact were<br>\nheld in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Alatas is to return on Tuesday to Jakarta, where he will join<br>\nin the preparations for a direct ballot in East Timor to be held<br>\nlater this month. The vote will give East Timorese the choice<br>\nbetween staying part of Indonesia as an autonomous region or full<br>\nindependence.<\/p>",
