Al-Ghozi admits to role in Philippine Embassy bombing<\/p>\n

An Indonesian man convicted of possessing explosives in the
\nPhilippines has allegedly admitted to detonating a bomb in
\nJakarta, which killed two people and seriously injured the
\nFilipino ambassador three years ago, police said on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Fathur Rohman al-Ghozi made the admission to Indonesian police
\ninvestigators, who interrogated him recently in Manila,
\nPhilippine police intelligence director Robert Delfin said.<\/p>\n
He said al-Ghozi confessed that he detonated the bomb by
\nremote control outside the Jakarta residence of Philippine
\nAmbassador Leonides Caday in August 2000.<\/p>\n
\"He made the confession because he was confronted with
\ntestimonies of other people who pointed to him as the bomber,\"
\nDelfin told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.<\/p>\n
Philippine police officials were present during the
\nquestioning, he said.<\/p>\n
Al-Ghozi allegedly fled on a motorcycle after the attack with
\na companion, the Philippine Star newspaper quoted another police
\nintelligence official, Jaime Caringal, as saying on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Delfin said it was up to Indonesian authorities whether to
\nfile charges against al-Ghozi in connection with the bomb attack.<\/p>\n
Al-Ghozi was not immediately available for comment.<\/p>\n
In Jakarta, National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Edward
\nAritonang refused to comment on al-Ghozi's confession, saying
\nthat the National Police had yet to receive a formal report from
\nthe detectives sent to Manila to question al-Ghozi.<\/p>\n
Edward told The Jakarta Post three police detectives have been
\nin the Philippines for two weeks to quiz al-Ghozi and another
\nIndonesian detained in Manila, Agus Dwikarna, for their alleged
\nroles in a series of bomb attacks in Indonesia between 2000 and
\n2002.<\/p>\n
Al-Ghozi, who was arrested in Manila in January last year,
\npleaded guilty to charges of possessing explosives in the
\nPhilippines last April and was sentenced to 10 to 12 years in
\nprison.<\/p>\n
Philippine police claim al-Ghozi is a member of Jamaah
\nIslamiyah (JI), a regional Islamic extremist group linked to al-
\nQaeda. Jamaah Islamiyah has been blamed for the bombings in Bali,
\nwhich killed 202 people last October.<\/p>\n
Authorities have also linked al-Ghozi to bombings that killed
\n22 people in Manila on Dec. 30, 2000.<\/p>\n
Authorities in the Philippines and Singapore have also
\nimplicated al-Ghozi in alleged attempts by Jamaah Islamiyah to
\nbomb the U.S. and Israeli embassies in Manila, as well as western
\ntargets in Singapore.<\/p>",
